Three years ago on June 2, 2015, nine of our Afghan colleagues were brutally murdered in the People in Need guesthouse in Zare district in Northern Afghanistan. The massacre took place without warning, as masked men entered the guesthouse at night and shot everybody in their beds.

This was one of the deadliest attacks against aid workers, both in Afghanistan and globally, and the brutality and senselessness of the attack brought grief and sadness to the families of the victims and sent shockwaves throughout the People in Need team. As People in Need was forced to stop its programs immediately, the attack also deprived Zare communities of the services and support that People in Need had been providing since 2002 – improving agriculture and developing local infrastructure.

Perpetrators of this heinous crime remain unknown. For the past three years, People in Need has pursued its commitment to supporting the education of the victims’ children and will continue to do so in the years to come. Join us now to commemorate those who lost their lives while working for Afghanistan’s better future.
