Go Home, Ivan! Come Remember August 1968 and Support Ukraine

Published: Jul 24, 2026 Reading time: 2 minutes

The annual 'Go Home, Ivan' memorial gathering will take place on Wednesday 20 August. At 6 pm on Boris Nemtsov Square we'll gather in front of the Russian Embassy in Prague to commemorate the tragic anniversary of the Warsaw Pact's occupation of Czechoslovakia, express our solidarity with the Ukrainian people, and remind ourselves that freedom must never be taken for granted.

Fifty-eight years ago, tanks rolled into Czechoslovakia, extinguishing hopes of a freer future for over twenty years. Today, as Ukrainians enter their fifth year of resisting Russian aggression, the memory of August 1968 takes on new significance. While history does not repeat itself verbatim, it does remind us of the value of freedom and why we must not remain silent in the face of imperial violence.

Practical information

20 August 2026, 6.00 pm

Boris Nemtsov Square, Prague

Admission is free.

Join the Facebook event too.

This year's event will feature personal testimonies and musical performances, as well as opportunities for people to come together. Marie Bastlová will host the event, during which guests including eyewitnesses and public figures will give talks. Further details of the programme will be published in due course.

One of the most striking features of this year's event will be the collective creation of a 'bill' for Russian imperialism. Visitors will be able to write on a tarpaulin several metres long what they believe constitutes the cost of decades of Soviet and Russian imperial policies, from the occupation of Czechoslovakia to the current war against Ukraine.

The event will also support the SOS Ukraine appeal, through which we are  helping those affected by the war.

Join us to reflect on history, support a good cause, and demonstrate that we have not forgotten.
