People in Need is increasing its flood relief efforts in Nepal. The Czech public have already donated CZK 29.4 million

The team has distributed food aid to 450 people, and is assisting local authorities with the operation of emergency accommodation centres and the coordination of aid. An additional three trucks carrying prepositioned materials have been dispatched, and further aid is being prepared for the four worst-affected areas: Kalika, Uttargaya, Aamachhodingmo, and Gosaikunda. Czech donors have so far contributed CZK 29.4 million to the SOS Nepal appeal.
Flash floods struck Nepal on 26 August after a massive volume of water surged down the Bhote Koshi River from Tibet. Among other places, the floods hit the towns of Timure, Rasuwagadhi and Syabrubesi, and continued downstream along the Trishuli River. The extent of the disaster is still being assessed.
According to Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), as of 31 August, 903 fatalities and 267 injuries had been recorded, whilst 4,247 people remain unaccounted for. Local rescue teams have managed to rescue or evacuate more than 10,451 people.

Hundreds of people are already receiving aid
The People in Need ERT is working closely with local authorities and communities in the affected area. Together with the Nepalese organisation CSRC, People in Need has provided food to 450 people who have found temporary shelter in emergency accommodation centres in Uttargaya. In two of these centres, the organisation is helping to organise accommodation and communal kitchens; seven paid volunteers are on hand to assist with meal preparation and to monitor hygiene standards. This assistance is currently set to continue for the next two weeks.
In addition, three trucks carrying prepositioned humanitarian supplies were dispatched to the Rasuwa area on 29 August. As early as 27 August, People in Need provided the local council of Uttargaya with 27 family tents and other humanitarian aid, including hygiene kits, from pre-positioned stocks in Naukunda.
Aid will be extended to the four worst-affected areas
People in Need is planning its humanitarian response in the four worst-affected areas in Rasuwa District – Kalika, Uttargaya, Aamachhodingmo and Gosaikunda. The team is in daily contact with local authorities and communities; together, they are identifying the greatest gaps in aid and deciding where to prioritise its distribution. In Uttargaya, People in Need is supporting data collection and the management of the humanitarian response, and has helped to establish aid coordination. The team has also been tasked, by local authorities, with supporting the packing and distribution of humanitarian aid from a designated warehouse, in collaboration with local partner organisations.
The most important things right now are emergency shelters, food, and drinking water
Alongside the search for missing persons, the immediate priorities include, above all, emergency shelter, food, and drinking water, clothing, blankets, footwear, and hygiene supplies.
It is also important to protect children, assist the elderly and other vulnerable people, and provide psychosocial support to families affected by the disaster.
Destroyed and damaged roads remain a major problem; in some places, they prevent larger vehicles from passing and significantly complicate the delivery of aid.
“In the coming weeks, it will become increasingly important to provide people with safe shelter ahead of the approaching winter. Rasuwa is situated at high altitude, and as temperatures drop, people who have lost their homes will need insulated tents, warm blankets, sleeping bags, mattresses, warm clothing and other equipment,” says Sabin Adhikari from People in Need Nepal. “Psychosocial support will be just as important. Many people affected by the floods are experiencing severe psychological stress and trauma; some have lost loved ones or still do not know what has happened to them. Special attention will therefore need to be paid to children, the elderly, people with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups.”
People in Need is also helping to warn of further flooding
In addition to the loss of homes, the floods also washed away hydrometeorological stations along the river. This significantly limits the community’s ability to monitor the situation. At the request of the Nepalese authorities, People in Need is supporting the installation of cameras along the river corridor to help monitor the river and enable a timely response in the event of another flash flood or a glacial lake outburst flood.
Czechs have already donated over CZK 29.4 million
People in Need launched the SOS Nepal appeal shortly after the disaster and, as part of its immediate response, released CZK 1 million from its Club of Friends, enabling it to fund emergency aid even before other resources become available.
The solidarity shown by the Czech public has been extraordinary. Since the fundraising campaign began, the Czech people have donated CZK 29.4 million to help Nepal.
