In May 2014, the Baghlan Agricultural Veterinarian Institute approached People in Need (PIN) with a desire to expand their dairy production with the manufacturing of cheese in order to generate more income for the development of their school. The institute has a dairy farm which has been supported by PIN since late 2012, and they are currently producing enough milk to start thinking of other ways to market their products in the local community.

People in Need facilitated a day of experience sharing with another agricultural high school already manufacturing cheese in May 2014. “The business team and students of Baghlan AVI were practically taken through the entire process from milking the cows to the final product. As of now, the production of cheese is still ongoing,” says PIN’s Agricultural business expert Mohammad Akram.

The farm keeper has now gained enough experience to start teaching the students how to produce cheese on a regular basis, a skill which will come in handy when the students graduate and need to find a job.

Baghlan cheese is popular in Afghanistan and can be found in the larger supermarket chains of Kabul. “It is fairly easy once you know how it is done. You purchase the cheese-making tablets – mix in the other ingredients, and then it’s all about patience,” says operational supervisor Jan Mohammad.

“We now have the opportunity to generate more income for our school and purchase new equipment for further development of the farm,” says director of Baghlan AVI, Abdul Rahim Hemad. “We are grateful for the support we received from our colleagues and for People in Need making the experience sharing possible,” he adds.
