Gaza
The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is critical. People across Gaza remain confined to one third of the territory; they endure continued airstrikes, military activity, displacement, and ongoing protection risks. Widespread destruction of civilian infrastructure, overcrowding, inadequate shelter, and limited access to healthcare, food, safe water, and sanitation continue to undermine their safety, dignity, and well-being.
Education—an essential source of stability and hope—has also been devastated. Hundreds of thousands of school-aged children currently lack sustained access to formal, in-person education.
Temporary Learning Spaces for 1,000 children
With most schools damaged or destroyed and many remaining buildings becoming impromptu shelters, Temporary Learning Spaces (TLSs) provide one of the few opportunities for children to continue learning. Together with our local partner, Al Nayzak, we have launched an educational enrichment programme in three TLSs in Khan Younis, Al Zwayda, and Nuseirat, that reaches 1,000 children.
The TLSs provide a safe learning environment with educational materials, stationery, clean drinking water, and snacks. Qualified facilitators deliver child-centred lessons in Mathematics, Science, Arabic, and English, alongside social and emotional learning (SEL), catch-up classes, and recreational activities that support children's well-being.
Addressing malnutrition and supporting children's mental health
Together with our Alliance2015 partners Welthungerhilfe and CESVI, our local partner JUZOOR, and with funding from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic and our SOS Gaza Emergency Appeal, we have helped reduce the life-threatening impacts of acute malnutrition and deteriorating water, sanitation, and hygiene conditions. Through the War Child Alliance, we have also provided psychosocial first aid to thousands of children and their families.
Supporting the people of Gaza
At People in Need, we have been providing humanitarian assistance, through our partners, to the people of Gaza since December 2023. Thanks to the generosity of our Club of Friends members and supporters of our SOS Gaza Emergency Appeal, we have reached tens of thousands of people with lifesaving assistance.
In April 2024, we launched the SOS Gaza Emergency Appeal, which has raised more than €300,000 (CZK 7.8 million). Fundraising continues to support our ongoing response. Alongside humanitarian assistance, we are working to raise awareness of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and its consequences through public statements and social media campaigns.
