Providing education for 1,000 children in Gaza
Published: Jun 26, 2026 Reading time: 3 minutes Share: Share an articleDespite the ceasefire, civilians and civilian infrastructure in Gaza continue to suffer Israeli airstrikes, shelling, and gunfire, causing casualties and widespread destruction. Education has suffered greatly in this context as ninety-three per cent of schools in Gaza have been damaged or destroyed.

Today, nearly the entire population of Gaza—including more than one million children—is estimated to need protection, mental health support, and psychosocial care. The impact on children is profound. More than 58,000 children have lost one or both parents, leaving many to cope with grief and uncertainty at a very young age.
Interrupted learning and futures put on hold
Education, a lifeline for hope and stability, has been severely affected. According to Education Cluster an estimated 228,000 school-aged children are currently without sustained access to formal, in-person education. Another 107,000 five-year-olds are missing out on early childhood education during one of the most important stages of their development.
The destruction of schools is staggering. Ninety-three per cent of Gaza's schools—526 out of 564—will require major rehabilitation or complete reconstruction before they can function again.
Three Temporary Learning Spaces for 1,000 children
"With most schools in Gaza destroyed and others being used as shelters, Temporary Learning Spaces (TLSs) are currently the only form of in-person education available to most children," says Simona Varga, People in Need's Humanitarian Advisor for Gaza.
"That is why, together with the local NGO Al Nayzak, we have launched an educational enrichment programme in three TLSs in Khan Younis, Al Zwayda, and Nuseirat, supporting 1,000 students," she adds.
The centres provide learning materials, stationery, snacks, and clean water in a safe environment for learning. Qualified facilitators deliver child-centred lessons in Mathematics, Science, Arabic, and English, complemented by Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), catch-up classes, and recreational activities.
In addition, parents and facilitators receive training on child protection and safeguarding to help create a safer environment for children. For education to flourish children need more than a classroom. They need safety, stability, opportunity, and hope.
Our support to children in Gaza is possible thanks to private donors in the Czech Republic who contributed to our SOS Gaza Emergency Appeal.
Supporting the people of Gaza
We began providing aid to the people of Gaza in December 2023. Since then, we have supported tens of thousands of people thanks to emergency funds raised through our People in Need Club of Friends and our SOS Gaza Emergency Appeal.
In April 2024, we launched the SOS Gaza Emergency Appeal. To date, the appeal has raised more than €300,000, (CZK 7.8 million) and fundraising continues.
Together with our Alliance2015 partners Welthungerhilfe and CESVI, our local partner JUZOOR, and with funding from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic and our SOS Gaza Emergency Appeal, we have helped mitigate the life-threatening impacts of acute malnutrition and deteriorating water, sanitation, and hygiene conditions in Gaza. Through War Child Alliance we have provided psychosocial first aid to thousands of children and their families.
