Our team at People in Need Philippines is assessing the situation and current needs and are preparing to provide additional support to affected communities.

Our work in Mindanao

The Philippines is among the world’s countries most-affected by climate change related disasters. Powerful storms with flash floods are a constant threat. Last year, the Philippines endured strong typhoons, additionally, Mindanao was hit by the 7.4 magnitude earthquake in October, causing significant causalities and material damage. Our team in the Philippines provided immediate support to the affected population, including psychosocial support and training to the local officials.

On Mindanao, we cooperate with our local partners to develop and improve flood early warning systems. Together, we upgraded flood monitoring sensors and developed a mobile based alert system to support remote communities on Mindanao.

We work closely with local officials and community leaders whom we have trained to prepare their communities for the evacuation, before floods come.

In Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi, we work with coffee and seaweed farmers. Together, we work on reviving their traditional sources of livelihood, which is seaweed and coffee farming, and we make sure that they are respected actors in market with these commodities.
